IBM (International Business Machines Corporation) is a multinational IT company which is headquartered in Armonk, New York, United States. It operates in over 170 countries worldwide and has been operational since 1911. The company was initially named Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR) and was renamed to International Business Machines in 1924. Apart from their work in information technology, IBM is a massive research organization. In fact, they have held the record for the most patents created in the US for 25 consecutive years. Inventions by the company include the following: the automated teller machine (ATM), the floppy disk and hard disk drive, and the magnetic stripe card, among many others. In regards to IT services, IBM makes and sells computer hardware, middleware, and software. Also, they provide hosting and consulting services in a number of areas. As of 2017, IBM is one of the world’s largest employers with over 380,000 employees. Among these personal are five Nobel Prize winners, six Turning Awards, ten National Medals of Technology, and five National Medals of Science. Most recently, IBM has delved into the sphere of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology in a number of some different ways. In fact, the International Business Machines Corporation is one of the world’s leading blockchain patent holders. IBM has a platform which allows users to accept payments from untrusted parties using blockchain technology. The platform has over 400 clients and uses hyperledger fabric and hyperledger composer to build business-specific blockchain. They’ve also collaborated with shipping giant, Maersk, to build an application to facilities large-scale international shipping using distributed ledger technology.
